Oxford Union Future Leader Removed Due to Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a college in Utah.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members appearing to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message accused the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
