United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Alert List with 11 Nations
The UK authorities has included an additional eleven more countries to its travel advisory register regarding the risks of methanol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only a few weeks ago, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple notable events like the fatal death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can cause blindness or fatality within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance typically used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not intended for drinking.
Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of spirits, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.
Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that every traveler should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the official advised.
"If something feels off, for example a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."
The full list of nations identified as presenting a danger of methanol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
